BIOGRAPHY

Legendary soca / ragga-soca / calypso artiste and composer, Alston BECKET Cyrus, has fostered an illustrious 45 year career with 28 albums, numerous award-winning singles, 1 movie soundtrack, Disco Calypso, in The Deep motion picture; 5 compositions featured in four American TV programs, the sitcom Full House and The Tonight Show With Jay Leno amongst them, and 8 Road March titles, all to his credit.

Born in Layou, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, in the Caribbean, Becket's first love was the steel pan. But with a gift for singing, he was always singing calypsos in the back-yard, as a kid. He switched to calypso after a concert at the Layou Lodge, in his home town, on Thanksgiving Night, 1968. Several persons, including Sergeant Phipps, the head cop at the Layou Police Station, at that time, encouraged him to take singing seriously. Phipps was there with him also, in 1975, when he was crowned SVG's Calypso King.

In 1972, while a member of the US Army, Becket decided that he wanted to pursue a singing career and as a result he performed in several US Soldier's Tours in Hawaii (1972-1974). In 1976, Becket began working with calypso and soca's greatest arranger, Frankie McIntosh, a union that has lasted 44 years and is still going. He struck gold with his break-out hit, Coming High, in 1977. He followed his 1977 success with equally successful singles:

Cover versions of this song have been done in several other languages. During Trinidad's Carnival 2000, smash hits Small Pin and Doh Eat And Lie Down swept the Caribbean airwaves, after placing first and second respectively, for Vincy Mas Road March in 1999.

In addition to party tunes, Becket creatively penned several songs related to world events, Caribbean politics, cricket and carnival, such as Wash Yuh Hand, edited and remastered because of the Covid 19 pandemic, Love Is The Answer (remade in 2001 with post 911 lyrics), Carnival History (earning him the Calypso King of St. Vincent and the Grenadines in 1975), Legalize De GrassHuman Rights, I Am An African, Hezekiah, Mama, Oppression, CardoMarie-Anne, I Want Soca, I Cry, Gal Ah Rush Me, Say No To Drugs, Laramania, Rights, Bring Back Moses Law, Grenada Will Rise Again, Don't Look Down On A Man, President Obama, Band Ah De Year and Mo Rush, to name a few.
